Dear young female leaders,

We gathered at Makerere University to celebrate three interconnected themes: women, Pan-Africanism, and community, in honor of a great African leader, Julius Nyerere. Nyerere was a visionary statesman and the first president of Tanzania. Throughout his life, he championed the rights of women, the unity of Africa, and the power of community.

We commemorate Nyerere’s enduring legacy and recognize the significant contributions of women in our societies. As young female leaders, you embody the strength, resilience, and potential to shape the future of our continent. It is essential to acknowledge and celebrate the unique perspectives and talents you bring to the table.

Nyerere firmly believed in the emancipation and empowerment of women. He understood that gender equality was not just a matter of justice but also a prerequisite for sustainable development.

He fought for women’s rights, education, and economic opportunities, recognizing that empowering women is vital for the progress of our nations.

Pan-Africanism was at the core of Nyerere’s ideology.

He envisioned a united and prosperous Africa, free from the shackles of colonialism and exploitation.

He believed that African nations should work together to achieve social, economic, and political liberation.

Today, we carry forward his Pan-Africanist vision, understanding that our collective strength lies in unity, cooperation, and solidarity across borders.

Community was a fundamental value in Nyerere’s philosophy. He believed in the power of people coming together, supporting one another, and working towards the common good.

Nyerere emphasized the importance of communal responsibility and participation, fostering a sense of belonging and cohesion within societies. As young leaders, it is crucial for us to foster strong and inclusive communities that uplift and empower everyone, particularly marginalized groups.

This gathering was, therefore, an opportunity to reflect on Nyerere’s teachings and draw inspiration from his legacy. It was a call for you and I to embrace our roles as agents of change and forge a path towards a more equitable and united Africa. As young female leaders, you have a unique opportunity to challenge gender norms, break barriers, and drive transformative change in your communities.

Remember that change starts from within. Invest in your education, develop your skills, and cultivate your leadership qualities. Support and mentor other young women, fostering a sense of sisterhood and collaboration.

Advocate for gender equality, fight against discrimination, and demand inclusion at all levels of society. Let us work together to create an Africa where every young woman has the freedom, opportunities, and resources to thrive.
In celebrating women, Pan-Africanism, and community, we pay tribute to Julius Nyerere and reaffirm our commitment to building a brighter future for all.

May his legacy continue to inspire and guide us in our journey towards a more just, equal, and prosperous Africa.
Thank you, and let us embark on this path together.
