KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) announced the temporary suspension of heavy trucks along the Zengebe-Namasale ferry route on Lake Kyoga, effective November 4, 2024.
The decision comes after the MV Kyoga 2 ferry, which operates between Nakasongola and Amolatar Districts, was taken out of service due to mechanical defects.
“We have suspended heavy trucks above 15 tons from using the Zengebe-Namasale ferry route until repairs on the MV Kyoga 2 are completed,” said Allan Ssempebwa, UNRA spokesperson.
The single operational ferry, MV Kyoga 1, has limited capacity, prompting concerns about potential delays and congestion.
To mitigate disruptions, drivers of heavy trucks are advised to use an alternative route via Kampala-Iganga-Nakalama-Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi-Soroti-Dokolo-Lira.
UNRA’s technical team is working to resolve the issue, and updates on the resumption of MV Kyoga 2 services will be provided soon.
“The safety of our users is paramount, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” Ssempebwa added.
The suspension may impact trade and commerce in the region, and authorities urge motorists to plan accordingly.
