NRM party releases its roadmap for the 2025/2026 general elections, outlining internal processes and key dates.

KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has released its roadmap for the 2025/2026 general elections, outlining key internal processes as the party prepares for national polls.

The schedule, unveiled Tuesday by NRM Secretary-General Richard Todwong at a party briefing in Kampala, details activities from April 2025 to February 2026. Senior party leaders accompanied Todwong.

The roadmap is based on the NRM’s core principles of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy, Todwong said.

“This is a very important milestone for our party,” he said, urging members and stakeholders to note the proposed dates.

Todwong said the NRM has a registered membership of 20.7 million, approximately 40% of Uganda’s population. This includes 10.8 million women, 9.8 million men, 7.4 million youth, 1.7 million elderly members, and 458,000 individuals aged 16-17, the eligible membership age.

“We have an authentic digitalized members register which we are going to use in our internal party election and for mobilization,” Todwong said, noting the party has over 19.8 million registered voters within its ranks.

The roadmap begins with the expression of interest and nomination of local council (LC1) chairpersons and village party officials on April 24, 2025, followed by the election of LC1 flag bearers on May 6, 2025.

Internal primaries for parliamentary seats are scheduled for July 16, 2025, with primaries for local council five (LCV) chairpersons, mayors, and councilors on July 24, 2025. Elections for LCIII chairpersons and councilors will be held on Aug. 18, 2025.

The nomination of presidential candidates is set for Oct. 2-3, 2025, leading to the national polling period from Jan. 12 to Feb. 9, 2026. During this time, Ugandans will elect the president, members of parliament, and local government leaders.

The roadmap also includes timelines for delegate conferences, candidate nominations by the Electoral Commission, and official campaign periods.

By releasing its roadmap early, the NRM aims to demonstrate its organizational readiness as Uganda moves toward the next election cycle. The party’s proactive approach suggests its intent to maintain its dominant position in the country’s political landscape through structured mobilization and electoral management.
