
KAMPALA, Uganda (April 20, 2025) — Makerere University has announced the commencement of applications for its undergraduate programs under the private sponsorship scheme for the 2025-2026 academic year, exclusively for students who have completed their Advanced Level (A’ Level) studies.
According to a statement issued by the Academic Registrar, Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, the university is inviting applications from Ugandan, East African, and international students.
“The Academic Registrar, Makerere University invites applications from Ugandan, East African, and international applicants for the undergraduate programmes under the private sponsorship scheme for the 2025/2026 Academic Year for ‘A’ Level Leavers Only,” the statement read.
Prof. Mukadasi outlined the minimum academic requirements, stating that applicants must have obtained the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least five passes or its equivalent, along with a minimum of two principal passes in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) obtained in the same sitting. He further clarified the eligibility based on the year of sitting A’ Levels.
“For day programmes only candidates who sat A’ Level in 2024, 2023 and 2022 are eligible to apply. For evening, afternoon, and external programmes, a candidate is not restricted on the year of sitting A’ Level,” the Academic Registrar noted.
The application process, as detailed in the statement, requires applicants to:
- Access the Institution’s Admissions URL: Visit https://apply.mak.ac.ug/.
- Sign Up: Click on the “REGISTER NOW” button and use your full name (as it appears on academic documents), email address, and mobile phone number.
- Password: A password will be sent to your mobile phone and email. The system will then prompt you to change it to a memorable one.
- Fill Application Form: Click on the “APPLY NOW” button displayed under the appropriate running scheme.
- Obtain Payment Reference Number: Click on the “Pay for Form” Button.
- Make Payment: Pay the non-refundable application fee (50,000 UGX for Ugandans, East Africans, and South Sudanese; $75 USD or equivalent for internationals, plus bank charges) at any bank used by the Uganda Revenue Authority. Mobile money payment steps are also available:
* Dial 2726# on either MTN or Airtel.
* Select option 3 (Admission).
* Select option 3 (Pay Fees).
* Enter the reference number obtained from the application portal.
* Confirm the application form details.
* Enter your PIN to confirm payment.
Prof. Mukadasi emphasized the Tuesday, May 20, 2025, deadline for submitting applications.
In a stern warning to prospective students, Prof. Mukadasi cautioned against the use of fraudulent documents. “Applicants are strongly warned against presenting forged or other people’s academic documents to support their applications for admission. The consequences, if discovered, are very grave indeed,” he stated. He also advised applicants to disregard any solicitations for additional funds from individuals claiming to act on behalf of the Academic Registrar and to use the correct program names and codes during application. The university will not be responsible for errors made by applicants in the system.
