MUBENDE, Uganda — At least two people died and several others sustained serious injuries Sunday evening when a passenger bus crashed along the Mubende–Fort Portal road, police said.
The accident involving a bus bearing registration number UBR 796N, known locally as “PokoPoko,” occurred after the front tyre reportedly burst, according to eyewitness accounts. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn.
Ten passengers were confirmed dead at the scene. Emergency responders and local residents transported the injured to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. The exact number of injured individuals remains unclear, but authorities described several as being in critical condition.
Traffic police arrived at the crash site and have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident. While preliminary reports indicate a tyre burst, authorities said other factors, including potential mechanical failure or excessive speed, have not been ruled out.
Images from the scene depicted the overturned bus in a ditch, surrounded by shattered glass and debris. Rescue operations continued into the night as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and identify the deceased.
The tragic incident occurred on Easter Sunday, casting a pall over what is typically a day of celebration.
Police urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before undertaking long journeys, particularly during holidays when road traffic increases.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
