Entebbe – Uganda’s Cricket Cranes continued their perfect start to the Pearl of Africa T20 Series with a thrilling six-run victory over a highly-fancied United Arab Emirates (UAE) side on Saturday at the lush Entebbe Oval.

In what was only his second match as captain, Juma Miyaji showcased nerves of steel, tactical brilliance, and individual brilliance to lead Uganda to back-to-back wins, having trounced Nigeria by 77 runs (DLS) in the series opener a day earlier.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Uganda had to dig deep after the early loss of Ronald Lutaaya for a golden duck. But the experienced pair of Raghav Dhawan (44) and Shrideep Mangela (39) combined for a crucial second-wicket stand, steadying the innings and laying a foundation.

A late burst from all-rounder Alpesh Ramjani, who smacked an unbeaten 21 off just 12 balls, pushed Uganda to a fighting total of 126/9 in their 20 overs. The UAE bowlers, led by M Rohid (3/23) and Z Zubair (2/15), kept things tight, but Uganda managed to post a defendable score.

In reply, UAE started strongly, reaching 55 without loss in under eight overs. Their openers, skipper Muhammad Waseem (33) and Muhammad Zohaib (24), appeared to be cruising until Uganda fought back through clever captaincy and disciplined bowling.

The game turned when Miyaji introduced Dinesh Nakrani, who bowled Waseem with a beauty. Shortly after, Miyaji himself effected a sharp run out to remove Zohaib – a moment that sparked a collapse in the UAE ranks.

Ramjani returned to star with the ball as well, conceding just 17 runs in his four overs and taking a key wicket, while the veteran Frank Nsubuga kept it tight with 0/22. Miyaji topped it all off with a crucial 3/28, as Uganda’s bowlers kept their composure during a tense finish.

Despite a late flourish from Zuhaib Zubair (15 off 6), UAE were held to 120/8, handing Uganda a memorable six-run victory against the world’s 13th-ranked side.

Ramjani was named Player of the Match for his all-round contributions, while coaches Abhay Sharma and Jackson Ogwang lauded the team’s character. “The boys showed real fight today. It’s the kind of spirit we need moving forward,” said Ogwang, adding that sharper execution will be vital in their next clash.

Next up is the much-anticipated ‘Migingo Derby’ against fierce neighbours Kenya on Monday, July 21, at 1:30 PM.

With two wins from two, Uganda remain unbeaten in the tournament alongside Namibia A, and are riding high with renewed confidence ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers.
