MASAKA, Uganda — Defending champions Buddu began their Masaza Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Gomba in the 2025 opener at Kitovu Sports Arena on Friday. The match also highlighted Plascon’s continued commitment as a co-sponsor, emphasizing their support for youth and community empowerment through the tournament.
Midfielder Crispus Sseruwuge scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute with a powerful long-range strike, thrilling the home crowd and making Buddu the first team in five years to win the tournament’s opening fixture.
The atmosphere was electric, with a large crowd witnessing the highly anticipated clash. Gomba started strong, launching several attacks, but Buddu’s goalkeeper, Marvin Ssali Ssebirago, made crucial saves to keep his team in the game. The first half was a tight contest, with Herbert Onen’s organized Gomba defense successfully neutralizing Buddu’s advances.
The second half saw end-to-end action, with both teams displaying high intensity. Ultimately, Buddu broke the deadlock and defended their lead with composure, igniting celebrations among their fans in Masaka.
Plascon, now in its third consecutive year as a co-sponsor of the Masaza Cup and a direct partner of Buddu FC, was present to witness the spectacle. Benjamin Bicung, Plascon’s Marketing Coordinator, expressed the brand’s pride in supporting a tournament that has become a cornerstone of Ugandan sport and culture.
“It feels incredible to be back,” Bicung said. “The Masaza Cup is a celebration of community, talent, and identity. As Plascon, we’re honored to once again be part of something that brings together millions of Ugandans across Buganda and beyond.”
Bicung underscored the tournament’s broader impact, particularly on youth development and community upliftment. “This tournament aligns perfectly with our values — community development, empowerment, and progress. It uplifts young players, strengthens local economies, and keeps cultural heritage alive. Supporting it is our way of investing in the future of Uganda, especially the youth,” he added.
Plascon’s sustained involvement has yielded tangible benefits, both on and off the field. Beyond providing pathways for young players — many of whom have advanced to the Uganda Premier League and even the national team — the tournament has fostered economic growth and cultural preservation. “Players, vendors, transporters, local artisans — many benefit from the business this tournament brings to their communities. It’s a ripple effect of opportunity,” Bicung emphasized.
This year, Plascon is set to enhance fan engagement with the return of its popular “Twaake” campaign, along with various activations, giveaways, and interactive experiences.
Addressing the players, Bicung offered a heartfelt message: “This is your moment — grab it with both hands. Play with passion, discipline, and purpose. You never know who is watching. You could be one game away from changing your life. At Plascon, we believe in your potential, and we’re here to support your journey every step of the way.”
“Today was electric. The crowd, the talent, the atmosphere — it’s everything we hoped for. Congratulations to Buddu for getting their first win of the season and well played to the Gomba team. Plascon is fully on board to make sure this year’s Masaza Cup reaches new heights. Let’s keep the momentum going,” Bicung added.
