KAMPALA– A group of Democratic Party (DP) members have challenged the current party leadership to stick to the Party constitution in whatever they do in order to avoid escalating misunderstandings with in Uganda’s oldest opposition political party.

These contend that the Party Flag bearers in the forthcoming general elections, must be through set out process under the party Constitution but not to be just selected by a group of people as it was recently emphasized by Democratic Party President Hon. Nobert Mao.
“Article 69 close (a) of the Party constitution, states that; In event of Parliamentary elections any member of the party who qualifies to stand under the provision of electoral laws, and willing to stand as a party candidate in any Constitutency, shall apply in writing to NEC. If it’s me from Mukono, I write to the committee in my Constituency which refers me to the top committee like which used to be Chaired by Dr. Paul Kawanga Semwogerere and John Sebaana Kizito of those days because these were rightly elected, not self imposed.” Remarked Benedicto Kiwanuka Galiko one of the aggrieved members.
That in the same article clause (c), it says that, on receipt of the names, the Constitutency committee shall elect and will forward the results to the Party district Chairperson, after NEC shall approve and adopt a candidate with a highest number of votes.
Galiko also asked, the top party leadership, to come out in open and take people through the process under which Beatrice Mao was nominated to carry the Party Flag on the position of Kampala Lord Mayor.
During last week’s press briefing,Mao that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has taken over candidate nominations in key regions, including Kampala, Jinja City, Wakiso, and Greater Masaka, something which is strongly opposed by the Party die -hards.
