KAMPALA, Uganda — A recent online article alleging that Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine purchased a $1.5 million house in Canada with party funds has been debunked as unsubstantiated.

The article, published by “The Explorer online newspaper,” claimed Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert, known as Bobi Wine, used money from the National Unity Platform (NUP) fundraising campaign to acquire the property. However, a review of the facts reveals multiple inconsistencies.

The publication, which is said to be a propaganda arm of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) targeting opposition parties, especially NUP, published an article that claimed the house in question, a mansion listed by Setheby’s International Realty Canada, is valued at $8.895 million, not the $1.5 million cited in the report. This price discrepancy alone raises doubts about the article’s accuracy.

Furthermore, the price of the house far exceeds the total amount of money raised by NUP. As of July 2025, NUP had collected just over 1 billion shillings (approximately $279,789). Even if the party were to meet its fundraising goal of 9 billion shillings (approximately $2.5 million), that amount would still be significantly less than the $8.895 million cost of the property.

The online report cites an “unnamed source” and a “political analyst” without providing any verifiable evidence. A reverse image search of the photo used in the article shows that it was a stock image from a real estate listing.

The article was written by Steve Mungereza, a writer who has a history of publishing stories critical of Bobi Wine and NUP. A search of Mungereza’s byline on the website shows a pattern of sensational and critical headlines targeting the opposition leader and his party. A search for Mungereza outside of the Explorer website did not yield any profiles on social media or professional platforms.

This is not the first time Bobi Wine has been the subject of rumors about owning luxurious properties abroad. Past claims about mansions in Boston and Tampa, Florida, have been thoroughly debunked by fact-checking organizations.

There are no credible public records or reliable sources that confirm Bobi Wine owns property in Canada.
