KAMPALA, Uganda — Standard Bank Group has announced significant leadership changes, with two prominent Ugandan executives taking on key roles within the pan-African banking institution. The moves highlight the group’s focus on promoting regional talent.
Patrick Mweheire, who has served as the regional chief executive for East Africa since 2020, will conclude his five-year term at the end of August 2025. He will remain a senior executive within the group and continue his role as chief executive of Stanbic Kenya Holdings.
Mweheire is widely credited with transforming the East Africa franchise, which includes operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, South Sudan and Ethiopia. Under his leadership, the region became the second most profitable in the group. Before his regional role, Mweheire was the chief executive of Stanbic Bank Uganda from 2015 to 2020.
At the same time, Francis Karuhanga, the current chief executive of Stanbic Uganda Holdings Limited, has been appointed regional chief executive for South and Central Africa. His new role is effective Sept. 1, 2025.
Karuhanga’s appointment comes less than two years after he took the helm at Stanbic Uganda Holdings in January 2024. He has more than 23 years of experience in banking and financial services and previously served as the chief audit officer for Standard Bank Group. He will continue to lead Stanbic Uganda Holdings during the transition period.
The appointments underscore the bank’s strategy to use homegrown leadership to drive growth and integration across the continent. According to a statement from the bank, the appointments are a “proud moment for Uganda’s representation in pan-African banking leadership.”
