Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, with two national parks offering gorilla trekking experiences: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the Albertine Rift Valley, is home to 17 habituated gorilla families, while Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, situated in the Virunga Mountains, has one habituated family.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking can be done throughout the year, but the dry season (June to September and December to February) is the best time to visit. The dry season offers easier hiking conditions and better visibility, while the wet season (March to May and October to November) can be challenging due to muddy trails and dense vegetation.

Obtaining a Gorilla Permit

To secure a gorilla permit, book at least six months in advance, especially during peak season. Permits cost $600 for foreign non-residents, $500 for foreign residents, and UGX 250,000 for East African residents. You can book through a reliable tour operator or the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Packing Essentials

When packing for gorilla trekking, it’s important to remember to bring waterproof hiking boots, a waterproof daypack, insect repellents, a rain jacket or poncho, a camera with no flash, binoculars, long-sleeved shirts and trousers, sweaters and sun glasses, bottled water and energy snacks, and a first aid kit. Additionally, consider packing a portable charger for your camera or phone, as well as a water filter or purification tablets.

Physical Fitness

Gorilla trekking requires physical fitness, as hikes can last up to six hours through dense vegetation and steep slopes. It’s important to stay hydrated, bring energy snacks, and consider hiring a porter to carry heavy luggage. Additionally, consider training before your trip to build up your endurance and stamina.

Dressing Code

Wear environmentally friendly clothes, avoid bright colors, and opt for long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Rain jackets and warm sweaters are recommended, as well as sturdy hiking boots and comfortable socks.

Briefing and Rules

Before trekking, attend a briefing to learn about rules and regulations, including keeping a 7-meter distance from gorillas, avoiding direct eye contact and flashing cameras, standing still if a gorilla charges, and only persons above 15 years are allowed to trek. Additionally, leave the habitat as you found it, and avoid littering or damaging the environment.

Conclusion

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an unforgettable experience that offers a unique opportunity to observe majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. With proper planning, preparation, and guidance, you can enjoy a safe and thrilling adventure in the Pearl of Africa. Remember to respect the gorillas and their habitat, and to follow all rules and regulations to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek.
