KAMPALA, Uganda — High Sound for Children Uganda has partnered with Promoting Equality in African Schools Organization (PEAS) to launch a six-week training program aimed at fostering safe and responsible media usage among students in four PEAS-supported schools.
The initiative, which commenced June 14, seeks to equip students with critical media literacy skills for navigating both offline and online platforms. The curriculum will cover various forms of media, including news article generation, broadcast media, online safety, and the broader impact of media on young minds.
“This program will empower children to navigate media platforms safely as we amplify their voices to speak out on issues affecting them,” said Hadijah Mwanje, executive director of High Sound for Children Uganda. “The teachers’ training aims to equip them with practical tools to guide the children through the child-led program, which will help them engage with media in a safe and informed manner.”
The training introduces hands-on strategies and resources for educators to integrate media education into their classrooms, fostering critical thinking skills in an increasingly digital world.
“Today we have begun by training the teachers who will serve as patrons of media clubs to be established in the respective schools,” Mwanje added. “The purpose of the training is to help them understand and implement the program.”
The partnership between High Sound for Children Uganda and PEAS intends to expand media literacy to 10 PEAS-supported schools, reaching dozens of educators and ultimately benefiting thousands of students.
George Ogaba , head teacher at Onwards and Upwards Secondary School – Buloba, underscored the vital importance of equipping teachers with the knowledge to guide students.
“In an age where digital content is more accessible than ever, the school recognizes that teachers play a crucial role in helping young people navigate the online world thoughtfully and safely,” he said during a teacher’s training workshop hosted at his school.
Teachers from Peas Pioneer High School- Mityana, Peas Samling Nama High School, Peas Horizon Luweero, and Peas Onwards and Upwards Secondary- Buloba attended the initial training, with plans to extend the program to more PEAS-supported schools.
