KAMPALA — Austria international Christoph Baumgartner has announced the opening of a school in Uganda to provide education to young women who would otherwise be deprived of the chance to study.
Hoffenheim’s Baumgartner revealed the project via Instagram. “Dear fans, I would really like to raise awareness about an issue which is sadly all too often ‘forgotten’, because it seems to be so far away: families facing poverty in Africa,” he wrote. “For many months now, poverty keeps on increasing in many countries, because the price of grain has risen astronomically due to the war in Ukraine, and climate change has left many fields barren.

“That is why I have decided to provide sustainable help via a private organisation in Uganda. I recently opened a school where, above all, young women can get an education, either after having to leave school due to pregnancy or because they did not have enough money for it; they often face huge difficulty feeding themselves and their children.
“Currently there are 77 participants in hairdressing and tailoring courses, and further courses will come in 2023.”
