Judiciary receives 90 vehicles for usage during the ADR Summit

KAMPALA-The Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Judiciary, Dr. Pius Bigirimana, has received 90 vehicles from the Ministry of Works and Transport to ease transportation of foreign Chief Justices, and Justices during the two-day Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Summit at Mestil Hotel, Kampala.

Mr. Bageya Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport formally handed over the Maxus station wagons this afternoon.

While receiving the vehicles, Dr Bigirimana thanked the Works Ministry’s cooperation. He also extended gratitude to Ms. Lucy Nakyobe, the Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet for authorizing the use of the vehicles.

Dr. Bigirimana noted that Uganda is hosting the first international summit on ADR. He emphasized that ADR mechanisms such as Mediation, Plea Bargaining and Small Claims Procedure that are being implemented by the courts, are vital in addressing societal conflicts and reducing case backlog.

Dr Bigirimana observed that President Museveni’s emphasis on Mediation over litigation and the Chief Justice’s efforts to implement a National ADR Policy are not in vain.

He also noted that the 2022/24 Class in Masters Class in Dispute Resolution conducted by Pepperdine University, USA will be graduating on March 4, 2024. And commended the instrumental role played by Prof. Andrew Khaukha, the Technical Advisor to Judiciary during the duration of the programme.

Mr. Waiswa expressed his delight in contributing to the Summit’s success and reassured the PS/SJ of the vehicles’ safety and the availability of professional drivers.

Present at the handover; Prof Khaukha, Mr Sulaiman Hirome, the Principal Assistant Secretary; and Eng. Tony Kavuma, and Eng. Olivia Nakamatte from the Ministry of Works and Transport.

The ADR is expected to attract over 300 Participants who will include;Chief Justices of Judiciaries of Africa , judges at various levels , Head of Adjucation tribunals , ADR Practitioners,Professional Associations as well as Government Ministries, departments and Agencies.
