KAPCHORWA, Uganda — A truck carrying cattle and passengers overturned on the Kapchorwa-Mbale highway on Wednesday, killing nine people and injuring three others, police said.
The crash occurred around 12:40 p.m. in the Kapwachiti area of Kapchorwa District, according to preliminary police reports. Authorities said the truck was traveling downhill when the driver lost control due to brake failure.
The vehicle, which was overloaded with livestock and passengers riding on top, rolled over, causing immediate deaths and serious injuries.
SP Micheal Kananura, the Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said the accident highlights the dangers of ignoring traffic regulations.
“This unfortunate crash has taken nine lives and injured three others due to brake failure and unsafe transportation of passengers,” Kananura said. “All truck drivers are urged to adhere to safety regulations and refrain from transporting passengers on top of cargo.”
Police have begun a full investigation into the incident and are working to identify the victims and inform their families. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Kananura stressed the importance of strict adherence to road safety standards, particularly for drivers of heavy and commercial vehicles.
“Let’s prioritize safety and protect human lives,” he urged, appealing to both the public and transporters to help prevent such tragedies.
