The Primary Leaving Exam (PLE) in Uganda is the main government examination that all students sit at the end of primary school level.

The results determine the kind of secondary school a child will be admitted to.

Mr Daniel Odong the executive director of the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) said that a total of 811,810 sat for the examinations out of the 832,654 who registered.

Out of those who sat 114,617 passed in first grade, 357,799 passed in grade two, 146,583 in third grade, and 95,702 passed in fourth grade while 97,109 were not graded.

This means that a total of 714,702 out of 811,810 who sat for the universal examinations have passed the examinations and can proceed to post-primary education, according to UNEB.

“In terms of numbers, 714,702 candidates passed the PLE compared to 659,910 the previous year. Overall, therefore, more pupils qualify to join the post-primary institutions than the previous year, Mr. Odongo said while releasing the results at the State Lodge in Nakasero, Kampala,

A candidate is deemed to have passed if he/she obtains Divisional grades of 1, 2, 3 or 4. Such candidates, he said qualify to register for any post-primary examination conducted by UNEB.

Division U (Ungraded) is awarded to candidates who have failed to reach the minimum level of performance that can be awarded at least a Division 4.

Mr Odong, however, said those who were not graded (97,109) should repeat primary seven since they have not been graded.

“Such candidates should not be admitted to Senior One, but should repeat as they will not be eligible to register for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination later.”
