KAMPALA, UGANDA — Makerere University officials kicked off the 2025-26 academic year Monday by advising incoming freshmen to focus on their studies and avoid distractions.
Academic Registrar Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, who also serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, presided over the orientation at Freedom Square. He congratulated the new students and emphasized the importance of hard work and resilience.
“Focus on your goal. Keep an eye on your goal,” Mukadasi said, encouraging students to stay disciplined and work toward graduation. He warned against distractions from politicians, religious factions and entrepreneurs, while also highlighting the importance of financial discipline.
Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, the Dean of Students, underscored the need for students to adhere to university rules and regulations.
“The Dean of Students’ Office enforces students’ discipline,” Kabumbuli said. She also advised students to prioritize essential needs, such as health and food, over non-essentials. “Please buy food, don’t buy phones, it’s about your wellbeing,” she said.
The 91st Guild President, Ssentamu Churchill James, echoed these sentiments, urging students to be intentional with their lives. He warned against distractions like unhealthy relationships, drug abuse and gambling.
“Don’t use tuition for cheap money,” James cautioned.
Mr. Author Moses Opio, the acting Principal IT Officer, also spoke about distractions, specifically warning students against unsafe internet practices.
“In terms of security, please do not watch pornography, because the source of the majority of viruses are these pornographic websites,” Opio said.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Bamunoba Ubaldo shared security tips, encouraging students to be alert, use common sense and avoid isolated areas.
The Freshers’ Bazaar and college-level orientation activities will continue throughout the week. Lectures for the new academic year are set to begin on Aug. 11.
