LUSAKA, Zambia — MediPay, an InsurTech solution developed during the 2025 COMESA Women in FinTech Hackathon, aims to close the healthcare gap for rural women in Zambia and Malawi by providing access to digital financial tools.
Many women in both countries struggle with financial instability and limited healthcare access, often delaying or skipping essential medical treatment due to out-of-pocket payment requirements. This perpetuates a cycle of poor health and poverty, particularly in underserved communities.
“There are over 21 million women across Zambia and Malawi, and more than half lack health insurance. We want to change that,” said Foster Mulenga, MediPay co-founder.
The MediPay platform, built with Mojaloop for real-time cross-border transactions, allows users to save for healthcare, access health loans and obtain insurance via mobile devices.
The team of young innovators refined their concept and received business training during the hackathon. “As developers, we learned a lot about business models and partnerships. It was a rewarding experience,” said Chansa Kashell Mwenya.
MediPay plans to partner with insurers and lenders to expand affordable health coverage and help providers reach more clients. The initiative was featured on Day 38 of the #40Days40FinTechs Zambia and Malawi edition, highlighting how FinTech can advance health equity and economic empowerment for women.
