
KAMPALA, Uganda — Parliament Speaker Anitah Among has directed the government to address salary enhancement for all public servants, following concerns raised by legislators about pay disparities and arrears affecting national security officers and civil servants.
During a recent session, legislators voiced concerns about unpaid salary arrears for police officers and the reduction of police lawyers’ salaries, despite a presidential directive for enhancement.
Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi sought clarification on the payment of these arrears. Other legislators highlighted broader issues with public sector pay.
Rosemary Nyakikongoro, District Woman MP, urged the government to prioritize teachers’ salaries, warning of potential negative consequences for education.
Aleptong District Woman MP Acen Dorcus requested a timeline from Attorney General Kiroywa Kiwanuka for addressing the salary concerns.
Mawogola South MP Gorreth Namugga called for cabinet intervention in the consolidated payroll system, while Kiboga District Woman MP Christine Nakimwero Kaaya raised concerns about the pay of army officers serving in Somalia.
Kumi Municipality MP Silas Aogon criticized inconsistencies in police salaries and stated that legislators should not be funding police operations.
Kasilo County MP Elijah Okupa attributed police officers’ involvement in crime to salary issues and called for a swift resolution.
Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi urged the government to maintain consistency in salary enhancements, particularly for teachers.
Speaker Among responded to the concerns by directing the government to address the salary enhancement of all civil servants. She also reiterated the need for a Salary Review Commission to ensure equitable pay across the public sector.
