Police alongside military and intelligence agencies have started hunting for gunmen who killed the bodyguard of Pastor Aloysius Bujjingo.

Bujjingo who heads House of Prayer Ministries was attacked on Tuesday at around 9 pm by gunmen moving on a motorcycle.

Although Bujjingo survived with minor injuries, his bodyguard Richard Muhumuza died on the spot. The incident happened at Buwalakata road junction, Namungona, in Lubaga Division in Kampala.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson said comprehensive investigations into the incident have commenced.

“We are investigating the attempted murder of Pastor Aloysius Bugingo from the House of Prayer Ministry and the unfortunate killing of his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

Police added: “At approximately 9 PM on January 2nd, 2024, unidentified assailants opened fire on Pastor Bugingo’s vehicle, registered as PRAIZ GOD, along Namungona, Zone 2, Kasubi Rubaga Division Kampala at Bwalakata Junction along National Housing Road, before swiftly escaping the scene on a motorcycle.”

Security has said that despite sustaining injuries during the attack, Pr Bugingo managed to transport Muhumuza to Mulago Hospital. However, Muhumuza had already succumbed to the assault and was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.

By the time police, intelligence, and military arrived at the scene, locals had tampered with the scene and nothing much could be collected as exhibits. This has left police with the only option of using CCTV cameras to identify the assassins’ movement.

“In our active pursuit of justice, we are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage to identify the assailants. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

Bujjingo is currently undergoing medical treatment and is under close monitoring. So far, police have recorded statements from eyewitnesses.

Muhumuza’s body was conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a thorough postmortem examination.

Every year, gunmen kill a prominent person in Kampala who is either a politician, security person, business person, or cleric.

Meanwhile, unknown people ransacked the home of former Kawempe MP Mubarak Munyagwa on Tuesday. However, Owoyesigyire said Munyagwa is well except that his home guard was injured by the thugs.
