NANSANA, Uganda — Police in Nansana are holding a woman and her daughter for questioning in connection with the death of James Wani, a 75-year-old South Sudanese national whose body was allegedly burned after he was killed.
Wani, who resided in the Katooke, Kisimu area, was the husband of the arrested woman and stepfather to her daughter. Community members became concerned after Wani’s sudden disappearance, prompting a police investigation.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango stated that the victim’s wife initially claimed Wani was admitted to Mulago Hospital. However, inconsistencies in her account led investigators to doubt her story.
“Upon inquiry, the daughter revealed that her stepfather had been murdered by her mother and his body was set ablaze,” SSP Onyango said.
Police later recovered charred remains believed to be Wani’s. The remains have been taken to the city mortuary for a postmortem examination. Authorities have also taken statements from multiple witnesses to assist in the ongoing investigation.
“We have opened a murder case file and both the mother and daughter are in our custody for further interrogation. Preliminary findings indicate there may have been a history of domestic violence in the home,” SSP Onyango added.
The investigation is continuing as police work to determine the complete circumstances surrounding Wani’s death.
