Ronald Rugumayo is embracing the challenge of elite company as he heads into the third day of the Pearl of Africa Golf Series at Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club.
The South Africa-based pro carded a one-under-par 70 on Thursday to climb to the top of the leaderboard, setting up a thrilling showdown with close friend and rival Ronald Otile in the main group.
“I consider Otile to be one of the most talented golfers this country has ever produced,” Rugumayo said. “He’s got an incredible fighting spirit and excellent skill. I’m really looking forward to being in the same group with him tomorrow.”
Rugumayo’s round was a blend of composure and resilience. He opened with a birdie and closed with two more, suggesting a player who is finding his rhythm at just the right time. Despite leading, Rugumayo believes he left a few shots out there.
“I’ve had a bit of bad luck,” he admitted. “On the second hole today, I had 150 yards to the green but the lie was awful. And on 16, I three-putted after hitting into the hazard. But overall, I feel like good fortune is coming my way on Friday and Saturday.”
While Rugumayo leads the field, the margin is slim. Just one shot separates him from a chasing trio of Ronald Otile, Grace Kasango, and Marvin Max Kibirige. A further stroke back sit Lugazi Hills club pro Canary Kabise and Rodell Gaita Taddeo, who recovered well after an early double-bogey on the par-3 third to finish at even-par 71.
In the amateur ranks, Joseph Kasozi leads by a single shot over Juma Abiti, Asuman Tumwesigye, and Joel Okoth. Among the ladies, Meron Kyomugisha and Martha Babirye are tied at the top of the gross leaderboard following Peace Kabasweka’s withdrawal.
Day two of the tournament was played under near-perfect weather conditions, a bonus for players and organizers alike.
The Pearl of Africa Series, launched in January under the Uganda Golf Union, has been praised for enhancing competitive golf in the country. Though open primarily to elite professionals and top amateurs, the event also emphasizes grassroots development through its broader programming.
The Lugazi Hills tournament marks the final leg of this year’s series. Organizers have confirmed that next year’s calendar will expand to include four events, a significant step forward for Ugandan golf.
