Speaker Among said Uganda and Vietnam have enjoyed numerous united factors like agriculture, and it is important to enhance collaboration and knowledge-sharing between the parliaments of the two countries.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has this afternoon held bilateral talks with HE. Vo Thi Anx Xuan, the Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, agreed to strengthen collaborations in areas of agriculture, technology, trade, and investment.
This meeting took place at the Speaker’s boardroom. Vice President Xuan is in the country to attend the ongoing 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China Summits.
In her remarks, Speaker Among said Uganda and Vietnam have enjoyed numerous united factors like agriculture, and it is important to enhance collaboration and knowledge-sharing between the parliaments of the two countries.
“I believe that having you in Uganda will lead to collaboration between the Parliament of Uganda and Vietnam. We look forward to the transfer of technological knowledge from Vietnam to Uganda so that our people move away from the analogy system and move to the digital world,” Among said.
Speaker Among added that the collaboration between the two parliaments will result in a Memorandum of Understanding which will bring mutual benefits in terms of effective legislation and opportunity sharing in trade, investment, and education.
Vice President Xuan said Vietnam values its cooperation with Uganda and appreciates the support the country extended to Vietnam in their past struggles for national independence and reunification.
“Uganda being the Pearl of Africa, we have everything; all we need is a market for what we produce. This market can be got from your country and that is if you give us a conducive environment to sell what we have,” she said.
Vice President Xuan said Vietnam values its cooperation with Uganda and appreciates the support the country extended to Vietnam in its past struggles for national independence and reunification.
She acknowledged that Uganda and Vietnam have untapped potential for further cooperation, and thus need to explore the opportunities.
“Given the profile stature of Vietnam and Uganda, the two countries should continue to support each other at multilateral forums and inter-parliamentary cooperation and frameworks,” Xuan said.
“We should look into legal frameworks in specific areas of promotion of investment protection, double taxation avoidance to further improve relationships.”
She concurred that agriculture will remain a major area of cooperation between the two parliaments.
“Agricultural cooperation projects such as the tripartite cooperation model similar to that we have engaged in other parts of Africa will be a key factor in this collaboration. Other than economic cooperation, we should also pursue cooperation in education, training, science and technology,” Xuan said.
