KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda Christian University’s School of Law has directed all Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students to wear black suits for classes, a move the university says reinforces its core values and the standards of the legal profession.
The new dress code, outlined in an internal memorandum dated May 26, 2025, requires LLB students at both the Main and Kampala campuses to don black suits every Monday and Thursday, starting June 5, 2025.
The directive specifies that the suits must be worn with a long-sleeved white shirt and a necktie for male students, complemented by black shoes. The memo explicitly prohibits suits and shoes of different colors, as well as sandals, canvas shoes and any footwear that exposes the toes.
Students failing to adhere to the dress code will be denied entry to classrooms, the main library and the School of Law offices on the designated days.
Beyond formal attire, the university also mandated well-kept hair for all LLB students on every day of the week. Colored or tinted hair is not permitted, and male students with “unacceptable styles and fashions” will also be barred from accessing academic facilities.
The memorandum, issued by the Dean of the School of Law, states that these measures aim to “buttress clear expectations for appropriate LLB student decorum within or outside the University setting,” reflecting the institution’s precepts and the professional aspirations of its law students.
