KAMPALA, Uganda — The Ugandan government has formally written to Tanzanian authorities, inquiring into the arrest and detention of prominent Ugandan rights activist Agather Atuhaire in Dar es Salaam.
A letter dated May 22, 2025, from the Ugandan High Commission in Tanzania, signed by Ambassador (Rtd) Fred Mwesigye, was dispatched to the Office of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) at the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam.
“The High Commission has been informed about the arrest and detention of Ms. Agather Atuhaire, a Ugandan National at the Central Police Station,” the letter states.
The diplomatic note further explains, “Ms. Agather reportedly came to the United Republic of Tanzania on different engagements but later got arrested and detained at the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam.”
The High Commission is seeking “information on the above-mentioned Ugandan National in Detention at your Facility and permission for the Mission Staff to visit and talk to her, and ascertain the possibility of her release and return to Uganda.”
Atuhaire, recognized as a vocal rights advocate, reportedly traveled to Tanzania for various engagements before her apprehension. Her detention has garnered attention and raised concerns among human rights groups.
