Why Court suspended Videos,Audio Recordings in Pastor Kayanja’s sodomy case

MENGO-On Friday, Mwanga II Court ( Nateete- Rubaga) Magistrates Court issued a directive stopping all journalists from using video and audio recording equipments in a case where nine people are accused of ‘falsely’ accusing Pastor Robert Kayanja of engaging in sodomy activities.

The ruling which was passed by the presiding Grade one Magistrate Adams Byarugaba resulted from an application which was filed by state Prosecutor , Jonathan Muwaganya on grounds that some people where misusing the recorded content to comment on the matter which is already before court (subjudice).

He therefore asked the trial magistrate to put suspend all forms of recordings during the hearing of this case but allow journalists to attend court but record the information using their pens and notebooks which court allowed.

In the same ruling, the Magistrate prohibited all pastors and members of the public from debating or giving views about the case before him.

However the ruling was not welcomed by the defence team who had wanted court to issue strict measures against the scribes covering this case.

The accused in this matter are: Wasswa Israel, Peter Serugo, Reagan Ssentongo, Moses Semanobe, Khalifa Labeeb, Henry Lyaz, Alex Wakamala, Martins Kagolo, Jamil Mawanda and Aggrey Kanene.

Prosecution contends that on September 17,- 2021, the accused persons and others still at large in Kampala district conspired together to falsely accuse Pastor Robert Kayanja of unnatural offences.

Its further alleged that the same individuals in the same period with others still at large on or about in Kampala district conspired together to commit a felony, to wit, conspiracy to defeat justice.
