BREAKING! Former Attorney General Dr. Kiddu Makubuya battling for life

KAMPALA, UGANDA -The family of the former Attorney General, Dr Kiddu Makubuya, has broken the silence regarding his health after reports circulated on Monday afternoon claiming that he had passed away.

However, a family member, William Ntege, clarified in a phone interview with this website that Dr Makubuya is still alive and receiving medical care in the intensive care unit at Nakasero Hospital.

“Prof. Kiddu Makubuya is not yet dead as some social media platforms are putting it, it is only his health handlers that can pronounce him dead but us as family members, all we can say, he is still sick and we pray for his quick recovery,” said Ntege.

Neighbours in Kalasa village, Makulubita sub-county, Luwero district, have noted Makubuya’s absence from the public eye for some time. The last time he was seen in public, he appeared frail.

Makubuya is a seasoned academic and politician, having served as a Member of Parliament for Katikamu South constituency, in Luwero district before he was ousted by Edward Ssembatya.

The staunch supporter of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Makubuya also served his country as Minister for General Duties in the office of the Prime Minister, in 2011, replacing Janat Balunzi Mukwaya who had retired from elective politics.

Before that, from 2005 until 2011, he served as Ugandan’s Attorney General but in February 2012 amid allegations of misappropriation of government funds, he resigned from the cabinet.

As State Minister in charge of Luwero Triangle, State Minister for Foreign Affairs (International Cooperation), Minister of Education and Sports, Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Attorney General and Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Education

Born on July 30, 1949, Makubuya holds a first class honours Law degree from Makerere University, which he obtained in 1974. He later obtained a Master of Laws degree and a Doctor of Juridical Science, both from Yale Law School in 1976 and 1979 respectively.

He also attended Law Development Centre where he obtained a Diploma in Legal Practice between 1981 and 1982.

In 1985, he enrolled as an advocate of the Uganda High Court.

Political career

Makubuya joined politics in 1988. In 1996, when he was elected as a Member of Parliament, representing Katikamu South in Luwero district, he was appointed State Minister for Luwero Triangle in the Office of the President. Later, he was transferred to the Prime Minister’s Office.

In the same year, he was appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs, a position he held until April 5, 1999, when he was appointed Minister of Education and Sports.
