Cardinal Wamala’s 97-year journey

NSAMBYA-On Friday, His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, the second Cardinal of Uganda and Kampala Archbishop Emeritus turned 97 years of age.

Cardinal Wamala who has been out of public eye since 2017 , resides at the Priestly Center Nsambya.

His birthday came in less than a month after he has celebrated 29 years as a Cardinal , 42 years as a bishop and 65 years in priesthood.

Cardinal Wamala was born on December15, 1926 to the late Cosma Kyamera and Theresa Namayanja in Kamaggwa village, Lwaggulwe Catholic parish in Rakai district.

His Eminence was ordained a priest On December 21st, 1915 , from Pontifical Collegio Urbaniano chapel in Rome, Italy.

He was appointed the vicar general of Masaka in 1974 and after served as a parish priest at Nkoni (1975-1977) and at Kimaanya (1977-79).

On July 17,1981, Cardinal Wamala was appointed Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana and consecrated on November 22 1981, by the Late Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga. On February 8, 1990, he replaced Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga as Archbishop of Kampala.

On 26th Nov 1994 , he was elevated to Cardinal Priest.

Wamala served for 15 years as the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese and after retiring from the above post on September 30th 2006, he was succeeded by the (late)Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga as the Kampala Archbishop.
