A group of 14 members from the Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Katonga Faction, including several high-profile politicians, appeared in Buganda Road Court today to face charges of being a common nuisance.
The group, led by MPs Ibrahim Nganda Ssemujju, Nicholas Kamara, Doreen Nyanjura, and Harold Kaija, denied the charges when they were read out in court. They were accused of engaging in rowdy behavior and blocking walkways on Katonga Road in Kampala Central on August 5, 2024, thereby obstructing the public’s right of way.
Through their lawyer, Elias Lukwago, the group applied for bail, arguing that they are presumed innocent until proven guilty and have substantial sureties. Lukwago also noted that some of the suspects are leaders in a political party and that their remand would disrupt party activities, including preparations for a delegates conference.
Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayiizi granted non-cash bail of Shs1 million to five of the suspects, including Kaija, Kamara, Ssemujju, Nangozi, and Nyanjura. The remaining nine suspects were remanded until August 7 after their sureties were deemed insufficient.
This development comes after 36 FDC members were remanded on terrorism charges at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court on July 29, following their extradition from Kenya.
