KAMPALA, UGANDA – Makerere University and the Mastercard Foundation have announced a renewed partnership for the second phase of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, which will offer 1000 scholarships for undergraduate and master’s programs over the next 10 years.

The scholarships aim to promote inclusive university education and empower young people to become leaders who can contribute to national and regional development. The program will prioritize female applicants, refugees, internally displaced persons, and youth with disabilities.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the minimum requirements for admission to Makerere University Main Campus, be facing financial hardship, demonstrate leadership potential and community service, and not hold any other scholarship. Applicants must also be under 35 years old (or 40 for refugees and students with disabilities).

Applications are open until June 14, 2024, and can be submitted online, by email, or in person. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further selection.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has already supported over 1,000 scholars at Makerere University since its inception in 2014. The program has enabled students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access quality education and develop leadership skills.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Mastercard Foundation to support the education and development of young people in Africa,” said Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. “This program has already made a significant impact on the lives of many students, and we look forward to continuing to empower the next generation of leaders.”

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is part of the Mastercard Foundation’s commitment to supporting education and leadership development in Africa. The program has already supported over 30,000 scholars across the continent.

“We are proud to continue our partnership with Makerere University to support the education and development of young people in Africa,” said Samuel Yalew Adela, Regional Director for the Mastercard Foundation in East Africa. “This program is part of our commitment to supporting inclusive and equitable education systems that enable all young people to reach their full potential.”
