LILONGWE, Malawi — A Malawian technology company, MobiPay Limited, is playing a key role in the country’s digital payment evolution with its Malipo platform.
Malipo, a versatile payment gateway, is streamlining how businesses and individuals in Malawi conduct transactions through bank transfers, mobile money, and cards. The platform aims to provide a secure and seamless payment experience tailored to local needs.
“Malipo is our flagship FinTech product, designed to empower businesses by simplifying payment processing,” said Alex Piringu, ICT Manager at MobiPay. He noted that the platform is accessible via apps on both Google Play and the App Store and supports all major payment options in Malawi.
Beyond traditional business payments, Malipo also supports a crowdfunding platform, enabling users to create campaigns and receive donations for various causes through the same secure payment system.
Piringu acknowledged that challenges such as limited awareness, financial literacy gaps, lack of capital, and complex licensing processes still hinder broader fintech adoption in Malawi.
MobiPay was featured on Day 21 of the #40Days40FinTechs Zambia and Malawi edition, a regional initiative highlighting fintech innovations that promote financial inclusion. The program, which originated in East Africa, showcases local innovators working to bridge the financial gap for underserved populations across the continent.
Through its integrated and user-friendly financial tools like Malipo, MobiPay aims to foster an inclusive digital economy in Malawi.
