KAMPALA – MTN Uganda has been granted a new 079 number range by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the company announced Tuesday, effectively expanding its network capacity to accommodate the growing demand for connectivity across the country.

The new prefix, which encompasses the range from 0790000000 to 0790999999, has been added to MTN Uganda’s existing portfolio of number ranges, which includes 077, 078, 031, 039, and 076.

“This expansion reinforces MTN Uganda’s commitment to providing seamless and accessible communication services for all Ugandans,” the company stated in a press release.

Effective immediately, new customers can acquire MTN SIM cards with numbers within the 079 prefix range by visiting any MTN Shop or MTN Service Centre across the country. The SIM cards are available for purchase at the standard price of UGX 2,000, upon presentation of a valid national identification card.

MTN Uganda has assured its existing customer base that the introduction of the new 079 number range will have no impact on their current numbers or the quality of service they receive. All existing MTN customers will continue to experience the same high-quality network coverage and service standards.

The company highlighted the various benefits that new customers with the 079 prefix will enjoy, including:

  • Comprehensive network coverage across all regions of Uganda.
  • Access to a wide range of innovative and affordable telecommunications products and services designed to meet the everyday needs of Ugandans.
  • Eligibility to participate in MTN Uganda’s exclusive loyalty programs, such as MTN Prestige, which caters to high-value customers, and MTN Senkyu, which rewards loyal users.
  • Access to MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) financial services, including Pay with MoMo, Market by MoMo, and Wesotinge, which provide convenient access to savings, loans, and digital payment solutions.

“MTN Uganda continues to uphold its promise of delivering reliable, affordable, and innovative solutions that empower its customers to stay connected and financially included,” the company reaffirmed in its statement.

The addition of the 079 prefix further solidifies MTN Uganda’s position as the leading telecommunications provider in the country. As of June 30, 2024, MTN Uganda reported a subscriber base of 20.7 million, with 12.5 million MoMo users and 8.8 million active data users.

MTN Uganda operates under a National Telecommunications Operator (NTO) license granted by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). The company offers a wide range of services, including network services, digital and financial technology services, interconnect and roaming, and the sale of mobile devices. MTN Mobile Money services are conducted through its subsidiary, MTN Mobile Money Uganda Limited.

MTN Uganda’s services are delivered through an extensive network of over 202,000 MoMo agents, 382,000 MoMo merchants, 200 service stores, and 13 main distributors, ensuring widespread accessibility across all 134 districts of Uganda.

MTN Uganda is a subsidiary of the MTN Group, a leading emerging market operator with a presence in 18 countries across Africa and the Middle East, serving 288 million customers. The MTN Group is listed on the JSE Securities Exchange in South Africa under the share code “MTN.” The group is currently pursuing its Ambition 2025 strategy, with a focus on growth in data, fintech, and digital businesses.
