ODPP Sympathizes with Lira Accident victims, commits to support families

KAMPALA– The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), has formally apologized for the families of People whose relatives perished in an accident on Lira – Soroti Highway on Monday 20th May 2024.

According to the official statement released by the ODPP’s office, signed by Jacquelyn Okui, their Public Relations officer, noted that they recognize the fact that road safety is a collective responsibility and therefore they are taking definitive steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We are profoundly saddened by the loss of life of the two individuals who were riding the motorcycle and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, loved ones, and community during this difficult time. We are devoted to providing the bereaved family with the necessary support during this difficult time.”

The ODPP also further expressed its sincere concern for all those injured in the accident, including the pedestrian and passenger. “We are committed to ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention and support throughout their recovery.”

Jacquelyn further revealed that their office is working closely with the authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and implement measures that prioritize the safety of all road users.

According to Police

The Lira-City CPS reported that they are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on the 20th May 2024 at about 1200 hours at around Rima Primary School along Lira-Soroti highway, involving motor vehicle Reg. No UG 1234J Toyota Hilux Grey in color attached to DPP Lira and motorcycle Reg. No UDG 443E Bajaj boxer.

It’s alleged that motor vehicle Reg. No UG1234J while coming from Soroti side to Lira-City at a very high speed and upon reaching Rima primary school, the driver knocked down a motorcycle Reg. no UDG 443E Bajaj which had carried a rider and the passenger.

The driver continued, lost control and knocked a pedestrian injuring him seriously. The motor vehicle then later overturned.

Police led by the OC traffic Lira-City CPS responded to the scene, picked the victims rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital where the rider identified as Otima Fednand aged 25 years old and passenger Ogwang Raymond 66 years old were all confirmed dead, they are residents of Aliri village, Akalo Sub-County Kole District. Their bodies had been Delivered to the mortuary pending Postmortem.

While the victims Okullu Emmanuel pedestrian and Agola Betty passenger in the vehicle, were all rushed to nearby clinic for treatment.

Both motor vehicle and motorcycle towed to Lira CPS pending IOV inspection.

Driver is in custody, preliminary findings indicates cause of the accident as over speeding
