Raised by his community in rural Amuria, Ona’s early life was marked by adversity, including the loss of his mother. Despite these challenges, he persevered, fueled by his passion for education. Ona attended Makerere University, where he studied Mass Communication, graduating in 1989.

Ona’s journalism career began at The Monitor, where he quickly rose through the ranks. His leadership and eloquence earned him recognition, and he became a key figure in Uganda’s media scene. In 1996, Ona co-founded The Crusader, a newspaper that gave voice to marginalized communities.

His entry into politics was unexpected, yet pivotal. In 1998, he won the Amuria parliamentary seat, succeeding General Jeje Odongo. As a Member of Parliament, Ona’s eloquence and integrity earned him respect across party lines. President Yoweri Museveni appointed him Press Secretary, a position he held with distinction.

In 2001, Ona transitioned to the corporate world, joining Nile Breweries Limited as Legal and Corporate Affairs Director. Over 17 years, he expertly navigated the complexities of corporate law and affairs, becoming an iconic figure in Uganda’s business community. His appointment as NBL Board Chairperson was a testament to his exceptional leadership.

Ona’s legacy extends far beyond his impressive career milestones. Through his memoir, “Tears & Triumph,” he shared his inspiring life story, demonstrating the power of resilience and determination. Ona championed scholarships for underprivileged children, empowering future generations. His commitment to community development and social responsibility remains a beacon of hope.

Ona’s humility and simplicity defined him. He believed that appearances should not overshadow one’s potential and ability. His approach to life was grounded in empathy, kindness, and a deep understanding of his humble beginnings.

Ona’s passing leaves a void in Uganda’s media, politics, and business communities. Colleagues, friends, and admirers remember him for his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. His life serves as a testament to the potential for success despite adversity, inspiring future generations.

Rest in Peace, Onapito Ekomolot. Your legacy endures.
