Alex Luwemba receives the backing of Muhammad Ssegirinya’s mother as his successor, vowing to continue the late MP’s legacy in Kawempe North

The family of the late Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya, has officially endorsed Alex Lusswa Luwemba as his political successor. Luwemba, who served as Ssegirinya’s trusted aide, received the family’s backing just a day after the late MP’s burial.

Ssegirinya’s mother expressed confidence in Luwemba’s ability to carry forward her son’s vision for Kawempe North. “We want to continue my son’s legacy because we believe Luwemba understands the people’s needs and will continue to advocate for them,” she said.

Luwemba welcomed the endorsement, thanking the family for their trust and declaring his readiness to step into the late MP’s role. He also appealed to the National Unity Platform president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, for support.

However, the endorsement has sparked mixed reactions from constituents and political circles. While some view it as a thoughtful choice to preserve Ssegirinya’s legacy, others believe the decision was made too quickly.

In a surprising twist, one of Ssegirinya’s widows has also announced her intention to contest for the parliamentary seat, promising to bring a unique perspective to leadership in Kawempe North.

The Electoral Commission has 60 days to organize a by-election to fill the vacant parliamentary seat. The race for Kawempe North is expected to be highly competitive, with the endorsement of the late MP’s family likely to carry significant weight among voters.
