MBARARA, Uganda — Police in Mbarara District have launched a murder investigation after the brutal killing of 25-year-old Akakunda Rita, a resident of Bwizibwera Cell, Rutooma Town Council.
The case took a disturbing turn when it emerged that the murder may have been orchestrated by Rita’s 30-year-old sister-in-law, Kembabazi Winnie. Kembabazi allegedly hired 19-year-old casual worker Byamakama Javira Mawuruba to carry out the killing.
Veterinary doctor Karegyeya Brighton alerted authorities to the discovery of the body. Police quickly responded, deploying a canine named Honey. The police dog successfully tracked a scent from the scene to a home belonging to Namutebi Jolly, where officers found blood-stained clothes linked to Byamakama.
Upon arrest, Byamakama reportedly confessed, telling investigators Kembabazi paid him to kill Rita over unresolved personal issues between the two women.
Both suspects are now in custody as police continue to gather evidence. Authorities condemned the murder as a tragic and senseless act of violence stemming from a family dispute, stating the investigation is ongoing.
