KAMPALA, Uganda – Uganda’s Vice President, Jessica Alupo, has announced plans to open a direct aviation link between Uganda and Russia. The move aims to facilitate easier movement of people, products, services, and capital between the two nations.

Alupo made the announcement during a meeting with Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko at the Eurasian Women’s Forum in St. Petersburg.

The proposed aviation route is part of broader discussions on bilateral agreements, focusing on sectors such as energy and security. Recent talks have also explored cooperation in the fight against international terrorism.

In a significant development, a Russian military delegation visited Uganda in August to explore a bilateral military agreement. The visit aimed to strengthen ties between the countries’ armed forces.

Uganda and Russia are also collaborating on energy projects, including the construction of two uranium power plants. The plants are expected to supply 15,600 megawatts of electricity to the country.

Vice President Jessica Alupo meets with Russian officials

President Yoweri Museveni confirmed the energy project, stating that two units will generate 7,400 MW and 8,400 MW, respectively.

The growing relationship between Uganda and Russia is expected to have significant implications for trade, economic cooperation, and regional security.

Uganda and Russia’s cooperation will cover key areas including energy, security and military. The two uranium power plants are expected to boost Uganda’s electricity supply. The direct aviation route will ease movement and trade between the two nations.
