The Government of Uganda has committed to improve services at Uganda Telecom Limited after rebranding it to Uganda Telecommunication Corporation Limited (UTCL)

In an event that took place at UTCL offices in Kampala on Wednesday, the government committed to improved provision of voice, mobile and fixed internet services at the rebranded company.

Speaking at the function, Investment Minister Evelyn Anite described the rebranding as a new dawn of a new era in the government-owned telecom company.

“We are happy for Uganda and Ugandans for having a national telecom. Thank you Ramathan Ggoobi for supporting the real economy that creates jobs for Ugandans,” she said.

“This redevelopment of the company will help provide employment opportunities to youth out there,” she added.

She added that UTL has a huge client base of ministries, agencies, and departments.

At the same event, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, emphasized the need to collaborate with the Uganda Communications Commission to give the national telecom carrier a boost and help it leap beyond 3G.

The chief guest, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said: “As a Government Uganda company, UTCL has the responsibility of providing communication services and contributing to the development of our country.”

“The Business remains focused and geared to the provision of quality products and services including Data and internet solutions, mobile broadband services, and Mobile financial services using modern and innovative technologies,” she added.

The UTCL Chief Operating Officer, Ms Maggie Lutwama, revealed a new brand identity characterized by a new logo and tagline.

She said the icon attributes signify that it’s a brand with no limitations and boundaries which emphasizes it’s network focus to reach every Ugandan.

“We are very excited and delighted as we birth our new logo and tagline, something we have worked on for a while and it will represent who we are and what we stand for,” she said.

“I would like in a special way thank our Board of Directors Chaired by Dr. Grace Sekakubo and the various Board Committees who have continuously supported us as we build a sustainable and profitable operation,” she added.

This comes after Uganda Telecom Limited’s assets were last year acquired by Uganda Telecommunications Corporation Limited at Ugx. 316 billion.

UTL Administrator, Ruth Sebatindira, said that her main task when being appointed by President Museveni was to ensure a smooth transition of the organisation to new owners.

She was also tasked with reaching a mutually beneficial agreement with UTL’s creditors. Sebatindira served as UTL Administrator from November 10, 2020, until November 18, 2022.

UTCL is 60 percent owned by the Ministry of Finance while the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology and National Guidance owns 40 percent of the company.
