UNRA introduces new ferries to facilitate trade and travel on Lake Kyoga

KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced the successful completion of sea trials for two new ferries, MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2, set to operate on Lake Kyoga.

The ferries, constructed through a partnership between UNRA and M/S Songoro Marine Transport Limited (SMT), will enhance water connectivity across the Eastern region of Uganda.

“The introduction of these new ferries marks a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the country’s water transportation infrastructure,” said Allan Ssempebwa, UNRA spokesperson. “We are confident that they will have a positive impact on the lives of communities surrounding Lake Kyoga.”

MV BKK 1 will connect Bukungu to Kagwara, while MV BKK 2 will link Bukungu to Akampala, providing a vital connection to Kaberamaido.

The ferries are expected to create seamless connections across over 8 districts in the Eastern region, bridging Busoga to Teso, Kaberamaido, and the Lango sub-region.

UNRA officials say the introduction of the new ferries is part of the government’s efforts to improve the country’s water transportation infrastructure.

The ferries are expected to be commissioned soon, with officials saying they will have a significant impact on the lives of communities surrounding Lake Kyoga.

No date has been set for the commissioning of the ferries, but officials say it will be announced soon.
