Jinja, Uganda – Human Resources (HR) Managers from Jinja and those across the country, have been urged to prioritize giving equal opportunities to various categories of people wherever they are conducting recruitment exercises in their firms.
During a one day event entitled HR Fusion held in Jinja on Friday , organized by Brighter Monday, one of Uganda’s leading Tech and recruitment platform, participants were taken through the benefits that comes with Inclusion at all places of work.
Xenia Wachira , the Country manager of Brighter Monday Uganda, pointed out that lack of enough resources and structures (especially in one man owned businesses) has made many businesses to shun inclusiveness, but there is hope that continued engagement with various key stakeholders will make a very big change.
“Some of the challenges people looking for jobs face is stigma, secondly, the cultural perception on women on some organizations. As time is going on most of these things are changing and we expect more changes.”
Pamela Kabahesi, Country programs lead , at Brighter Monday Uganda, emphasized their commitment, to continue leading the conversations about workplace excellence through its various initiatives like HR Fusion.
“We have key HR practitioners from across the country and what we are doing is to create awareness of inclusiveness. The discussion included what it means to create an inclusive work space in Uganda today like, how do you cater for your employees who are differently bodied, like people with disabilities , displaced people, women with their needs, pregnant women, as well as breast feeding mothers .”
She also noted that the knowledge acquired in the workshop, will be used by Human Resource Managers in ensuring that they make their work places conducive to all groups of people.
Ahmed Alaga, Head of Programs Impact and Partnerships The African Talent Company (TATC),
pointed out that it’s through such gatherings that , they get to understand the kind of employees, various organizations/companies need so that they can do more training and career guidance basing on the relevant skills. “Once young people get these skills , they can get employment opportunities where they exist.”
He called upon all young people preparing to join the work force, to think about gaining experience first and creating a good name , then the rest will be much easier for them.
“Work for your name not money, if you get a name, it will work for you and make you money. Always ask for support wherever you can, even if you’re not paid but provided you have acquired a skill.”
HR Fusion convened a diverse assembly of HR professionals, business leaders, and managers. Attendees hailed from key sectors including manufacturing, hospitality, NGOs, the health sector, and ICT, underscoring the universal relevance of workplace inclusion. The event’s dynamic format featured impactful breakout sessions and a compelling keynote address, all designed to deliver actionable insights.
This HR Fusion event also reinforced Brighter Monday Uganda’s commitment to creating pathways for dignified and fulfilling work for young Ugandans, a core tenet of our strategic partnership with the Mastercard Foundation under the Young Africa Works Program.
