Ex-URA boss Doris Akol lands huge job at IMF

Doris Akol, the former Commissioner General of Uganda Revenue Authority, has been appointed the Senior Economist in the Fiscal Affairs Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Akol’s appointment was announced on Tuesday, 09 January 2024 by League of East African Directors of which she is a member.

“Congratulations on your new role. What a start to the new year,” they wrote on their social media page.

Until now, she has been working as Technical Assistance Advisor at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Akol, who is a lawyer by profession, is a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland Fellow, Africa Institute of Public Administration.

She also holds a postgraduate Diploma in Law Practice (Dip.Law.Pract.), obtained from the Law Development Centre, in Kampala. Her Diploma in Financial Management (Dip.Fin.Mngmt.), was obtained from the Uganda Management Institute. She holds the degree of Master of Laws (LLM), obtained from Makerere University. Her second degree of Master of Laws, was obtained from McGill University in Canada in 2001. She is a member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA).

From 2012 until 2014,  Akol was the Commissioner for Legal Services and Board Affairs at the Uganda Revenue Authority. In that capacity, she also served as the Company’s Legal Secretary. In October 2014, she was appointed Commissioner general at URA. She assumed office on 30 October 2014.

On 29 March 2020, Akol was relieved of her duties at URA and John Musinguzi Rujoki was named as her replacement.

At the helm of URA, Akol grew Uganda’s tax body’s revenue from shs8 billion in the financial year 2013/14 to shs14 billion in the financial year 2017/2018. From URA, she joined Dentons’ Kampala office where she has been serving as a Partner since 2020.
