One Dead as grabbers invade Land in Entebbe

Police boss, Patrick Onyango comments on Sonko’s murder

A one Michael Katende has expressed dissatisfaction in the manner Police in Kajjansi have handled the case where one of his workers at his land in Entebbe was attacked and killed by serial land grabbers.

Katende has revealed that despite running to Police for help on a number of occasions, he has not received any justice, however, the alleged land grabbers have been shielded. He has thus appealed for the President to come in and help save his property as well as ensuring justice to his workers one of whom has lost his life.

Fred Kazibwe, the property manager revealed that on 8th September 2022, their workers were brutally attacked and a one Robert Ssonko was murdered, while the rest are on life support in critical condition at Mulago National referral hospital.

Kazibwe said that the attack happened on Michael Katende’s two acre piece of land located at Bunkabira, Nsagu sub-county, Entebbe in Wakiso district.

Kazibwe alleges that On the night before the attack, the Kampala Metropolitan Commander KMP commander Stephen Tanui, ordered for the release of Simon Mugume, Nicholas Nyombe, and Kalifani Shafik who he says are agents of Charles Kyagaba from Entebbe Police in the night, despite the fact that the Chief Resident State Attorney had instructed Police to produce them in court the following morning; after the State House Anti-Corruption Unit had ordered for their arrest on cases related to land grabbing and also attacking and injuring Katende’s workers on several occasions.

The Late Sonko

Kazibwe asserts that the RPC KMP-South Godfrey Achira and the DPC Kajjansi were called and informed shortly after the victims had been attacked. But they did not respond until about 01:30pm, leaving the victims to suffer an agonizing four and a half hours as the attackers tortured them with machetes and clubs, allegedly knowing that they had Police protection. And yet, the location is only 15 minutes away from Kajjansi Police.

He also alleges that after belatedly picking up the victims at around 01 pm, the DPC Kajjansi only got the victims delivered to Mulago Hospital at around 04 pm, thus subjecting them to another torturous 3 hours through deliberate delays. And yet, Mulago is only 40 minutes away from the location.

“We immediately tried to report the murder and carnage to Nsagu Police (which is under Entebbe Police and has jurisdiction). But we were told that the RPC KMP-South and Sulait Kitaka (the DPC Kajjansi – who legally has no jurisdiction over the area) had allegedly called them and threatened them to not register the case.” Said Kazibwe

Kyagaba Charles is said to be a renowned land grabber in areas of Entebbe. He was arrested by the State House Anti- Corruption Unit, arraigned in Entebbe court and remanded to Kitalya prison until 19, September, 2022.

Commenting on the incident, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango noted that this matter has been brought to the attention of Police adding that it is regrettable that two contradicting groups fought leading to the loss of life.

He however refuted allegations that Katende and the group were never responded to by the police authorities noting that they have had their case entered, as such they have reference numbers to the case.
