KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Law Society has nullified the nomination process for the East African Law Society’s Deputy Secretary General position, citing a significant breach of trust.

A meeting of the Uganda Law Society’s Council, held on November 28, 2024, at Speke Resort Munyonyo, uncovered that a unilateral decision had been made by Mr. Phillip Munaabi to impose an unauthorized USD 1000 nomination fee, contrary to East African Law Society regulations.

“The Uganda Law Society Council has determined that this breach represents a systematic pattern of misconduct, characterized by repeated violations of Council trust and deliberate undermining of institutional integrity,” said Eddie Nangulu, Interim Honorary Secretary of the Uganda Law Society.

The Council’s decision was prompted by a confirmation from the East African Law Society Secretariat that no nomination fees are required for candidates seeking positions on the East African Law Society Governing Council.

“We are disappointed that our trust was breached in such a manner. The Uganda Law Society will not tolerate any actions that undermine its integrity and the trust of its members,” Nangulu added.

As a result, the Council is calling for a fresh expression of interest from members to participate in the East African Law Society election for the Deputy Secretary General position.

Interested candidates must submit their applications via email to secretary@uls.or.ug, addressed to the Interim Secretary ULS, no later than 11:59 pm on November 28, 2024. The applications must include the candidate’s EALS subscription payment receipt for 2024, a personal profile, and proof of practice for the last 5 years.

“Only documents sent through email will be considered. Successful candidates will be notified via email,” Nangulu said.

The Council has also announced that individuals who previously paid the unauthorized $1000 fee will receive a full refund upon presentation of proof of payment.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this breach of trust. We are committed to ensuring that our elections are free and fair, and that our members’ trust is respected,” Nangulu concluded.
