What you need to know about 2024 Census Night

KAMPALA-As we are left with a few minutes to the long awaited 2024 National Housing and Population Census night , here are the key points you need to know about this night.

Census night is the day preceding the actual census day. It’s the night to which all census questions will be referred to.

This year’s census night will start at exactly 12.00am.

On addressing the press in Kampala on Wednesday, Dr. Chris Mukiza , the Executive Director of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) revealed that working in partnership with various security Agencies in the country, they will stage road blocks on all major roads on the Census night in order count the floating population.

“UBOS has made arrangements to ensure everyone is counted, including those that will be travelling at night. If someone is always on the road, we will count them from their buses, and we will give them a card as a confirmation that they have been counted. We will stage roadblocks at the borders to enable enumeration” Mukiza noted

For those who will not be at their homes during the Census night, Mukiza revealed that they will be counted from their places of work.

The citizens who will be found outside the country tonight will not be enumerated in any of the designated days of Census. But the foreigners who will be found in the country tonight, will be counted.

On the issue of giving birth, UBOS noted that Children who will be born after the census night and those who will be born in the days after the census night, will not be counted.

During the counting exercise, Enumerators will go to lodges and hotels with in their areas to count people there using the information provided at the reception.

Privacy of the information provided under UBOS Act 1998 , it emphasizes confidentiality of all data collected from the respondents and it’s the reason why Enumerators have to take an oath of secrecy before commence with their work.

However , Dr. Chris Mukiza clarified that there will be no counting at night because the ‘Census Night’ is only a reference point. The enumeration Will take place during the day enumerators will be asking for the persons who slept at a given household on the ‘Census Night’.

“Since we cannot reach all the households in Uganda in one day, the enumeration will take ten days i.e. from 10th- 19th May 2024.” He further added.
